Nonrelativistic Bound States in Quantum Field Theory∗

چکیده
Nonrelativistic bound states are studied using an effective field theory. Large logarithms in the effective theory can be summed using the velocity renormalization group. For QED, one can determine the structure of the leading and next-to-leading order series for the energy, and compute corrections up to order α ln α, which are relevant for the present comparison between theory and experiment. For QCD, one can compute the velocity renormalization group improved quark potentials. Using these to compute the renormalization group improved t̄t production cross-section near threshold gives a result with scale uncertainties of 2%, a factor of 10 smaller than existing fixed order calculations.

Effective field theories for QED bound states: extending Nonrelativistic QED to study retardation effects
Nonrelativistic QED bound states are difficult to study because of the presence of at least three widely different scales: the masses, three-momenta (pi) and kinetic energies (Ki) of the constituents. Nonrelativistic QED (NRQED), an effective field theory developed by Caswell and Lepage, simplifies greatly bound state calculations by eliminating the masses as dynamical scales. As we demonstrate...

We consider the nonrelativistic quantum mechanics of a model of two spinless fermions interacting via a two-body potential. We introduce quantum fields associated with the two particles as well as the expansion of these fields in asymptotic " in " and " out " fields, including such fields for bound states, in principle. We limit our explicit discussion to a two-body bound state. In this context...

The mechanism of formation of bound states in the relativistic quantum field theory is demonstrated by the Yukawa field model. It is shown that the weak coupling regime leads to the potential picture, i.e. it is equivalent to the nonrelativistic limit in the bound state problem. In the strong coupling regime the potential picture is not valid and the method of bosonisation of fermion currents (...
متن کاملNrqed in Bound States: Applying Renormalization to an Effective Field Theory
This is a pedagogical introduction to NRQED, a nonrelativistic approximation to quantum electrodynamics. It can be made to reproduce QED to any degree of precision when applied to nonrelativistic systems and is particularly powerful when applied to bound states. We will begin by explaining what makes bound states so special, and so difficult to treat using QED. We will then develop the most näı...
متن کاملBound States and Power Counting in Effective Field Theories
The problem of bound states in effective field theories is studied. A rescaled version of nonrelativistic effective field theory is formulated which makes the velocity power counting of operators manifest. Results obtained using the rescaled theory are compared with known results from NRQCD. The same ideas are then applied to study Yukawa bound states in 1 + 1 and 3 + 1 dimensions, and to analy...
